Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill from Breaking the Spine, and specifically spotlights upcoming novels we can’t wait to read. As always, there are some amazing upcoming books, but this week I’m particularly excited for…
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black
Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave.
One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.
Do I really have to wait until September to read this book? Tithe and The Spiderwick Chronicles were some of my favorite fantasy books when I was younger, and I’ve been meaning to read Curse Workers forever. I also haven’t read a vampire book in a while, so this could be a nice break from all the contemporary and dystopian I’ve been reading. I also read recently that this book is based on a short story in Black’s collection The Poison Eaters and Other Stories. Yet another book to add to my summer to-read list.
