Mixtape Mondays: Mila 2.0

Mixtape Mondays is an original, semi-weekly meme created by yours truly. This week’s subject is Mila 2.0.

I Am Not a Robot – Marina and the Diamonds – Mila struggles with her android identity

I’m vulnerable, I’m vulnerable
I am not a robot
You’re loveable, so loveable
But you’re just troubled

Guess what? I’m not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I’m not a robot, a robot

Can you teach me how to feel real?
Can you turn my power on?
Well, let the drum beat drop

Guess what? I’m not a robot
Guess what? I’m not a robot

Fembots – Robyn – Mila sassily struggles with being an android who has emotions

I’ve got some news for you
Fembots have feelings too, you know
You split my heart in two
Now what you gonna do?

Here we go
My system’s in mint condition
The power’s up on my transistors
Working fine, no glitches
Plug me in and flip some switches
Pull up in docking position
Pop the hatch and hit ignition
Bu-bu-burn out baby
Ready for demolition

Crush on Everyone – Jonah Matranga – for awkward android romance

If you have just one, let me be that love
If you have lots of others, please let me be
please let me be one
let me be one
If you like undressing, please let me find out
If you like large intestines, please let me find
please please please let me find out
let me find out

Can’t Go Back Now – The Weepies – an unironic song about Mila’s journey

You know there will be days
When you’re so tired
That you can’t take another step
The night will have no stars
And you’ll think you’ve gone as far
As you will ever get

You and me wak on, walk on, walk on
‘Cause you can’t go back now

Mixtape Mondays: Splintered

Mixtape Mondays is an original semi-weekly meme created right here at Bibliophilia, in which I get to combine my passions for books and music by creating soundtracks for a book of my choice.

This week’s pick is A. G. Howard’s Splintered, an absolutely phenomenal book by a 2013 debut author.

splintered ARC

UnknownSimon And Garfunkel Sounds of Silenceamanda-palmer-who-killed-amanda-palmer511-DiWwGSL

1. Treacherous – Taylor Swift – the perfect love song for Alyssa and Jeb
Put your lips close to mine
As long as they don’t touch
Out of focus, eye to eye
Till the gravity’s too much
And I’ll do anything you say
If you say it with your hands
And I’d be smart to walk away, but you’re quicksand

This slope is treacherous
This path is reckless
This slope is treacherous
And I, I, I like it

2. Sound of Silence – Simon & Garfunkel – for Alyssa, her mother, and the whole Lidell line
Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

3. Runs in the Family – Amanda Palmer – for the Lidells
I cannot
Run from my family
They’re hiding inside me
Corpses on ice
Come in if you’d like
But just don’t tell my family
They’d never forgive me
They say that I’m crazy

4. Thick Skin – Hannah Georgas – from Morpheus to Alyssa
Come on down and pay a visit to the circus
It won’t cost you much
Just come prepared with some thick skin
We can all get along for the first five minutes
Then from there, just hold your breath
Try not to let your head spin, yeah

5. Two Faced Twin – Gregory & the Hawk – Alyssa for Morpheus
You’re a mirror with two faces
Two sides, simple as that
When I look at my reflection
Do I see myself?

6. End of the World – Ingrid Michaelson – Alyssa & Jeb
At the end of, at the end of the world
Will you find me, will you find me?
At the end of, at the end of the world
Will you find me so that we can go
Together, together, together.

7. Hunted by Ghosts – The Local Strangers – Alyssa in Wonderland
I am hunted by ghosts
They follow wherever I go
I try to run as fast as I can
They always seem to find me
They always know where I am

8. If You Want Me – Marketa Irglova – Alyssa for Jeb
Are you really here or am I dreaming
I can’t tell dreams from truth

Mixtape Mondays: Perfect Matches

I didn’t really have enough favorite love triangles to make a Top Ten post, so I’m just going to write about them and give them each a mini-soundtrack here. Team stickers courtesy of I’m Lovin’ Books. And in case anyone was wondering, yes, I am in fact a hopeless romantic.

To me, this is the love triangle that started them all. I for one always hoped Katniss would end up with Peeta, because throughout the whole trilogy he let her be her tough self, but she could always show him her vulnerable side as well and he would never think less of her. They’ve both seen each other at their most vulnerable times, and while Gale may have been her friend for longer, seeing someone when they are in the most pain and sticking by them also provides strength for a relationship. I remember some fans were upset that Katniss chose to settle down and be a wife and mother, but to me, having power as a woman is all about utilizing our right to choose. On a slightly different note, something I really liked about The Hunger Games was that even though romance was certainly a part of the story, it was still really about Katniss and her struggles. All too often in YA lit (and the media in general, actually), romances end up being more about the male characters and their wants/needs even if a female is presented as the protagonist. Katniss is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

Song: Stay with Me – Sarah Jaffe

You say go, I’ll go
if you wanted to take it slow
we’ll take it slow
put your hands over my eyes
I’m happy to be blind

I’ll be damned
it’s happening again
in minutes we’ll see ourselves
in a whole new light
and pieces from our shelves
will take flight

Please stay with me
stay with me

I was really surprised by how much I liked Maxon in Kiera Cass’s The Selection. When I read the summary about how America is basically forced into the competition against her will, I was certain I would be rooting for Aspen, her true love back home. However, I found myself feeling really irritated by Aspen, because he kept trying to make America’s decisions for her, like by breaking things off with her just before she goes to the palace because he doesn’t want her to marry into his lower caste. I was quite upset when Aspen showed up at the palace, because for a while there it seemed like America and Maxon were really hitting it off, and she was starting to like him. Team Maxon all the way!

Song: Fairytale – Sara Bareilles

’cause I don’t care for your fairytales
You’re so worried about the maiden though you know
She’s only waiting on the next best thing

Obviously a series set in a world where love is treated as a disease is going to have a lot of romance. But like Katniss, Lena is her own character, and she drives the series rather than her romances. Love makes Lena stronger and motivates her to try and make things better for the world. Naturally, I loved Alex in Delirium and was heartbroken when he died, but I’ll admit by the end of PandemoniumI was starting to warm up to Julian a bit (but only a bit). But then of course MegaTwist happens on the last page and Alex shows up, significantly less dead, and for me that means Julian is history. Still, (and I know I said this in my review of Pandemonium, but whatever), Alex doesn’t really have a right to be angry with Lena for falling for someone else. She thought he was dead, for goodness sakes! Even though he was kind of a jerkbutt for his little scene in Pandemonium, I really hope they can move past the slight Julian thing and get back together. He was her first love, after all.

Songs: It’s About to Get Worse – I Blame Coco

Lift up my eyes
And replace my mind
I hope you will fall
I hope you’ll fall in love with me again

Hold My Heart – Sara Bareilles

Does anybody know how to hold my heart
How to hold my heart?
‘Cause I don’t want to let go, let go, let go too soon

To be honest, I never really thought Xander had a chance with Cassia. I think they’d been friends for too long, and though Xander may have thought of Cassia as something more, it always seemed like she thought of him as more of a brother. Plus, Ky was the one who taught Cassia to read and write, which allowed her to stay connected to her beloved grandfather and add meaning to the lives of others with the Gallery, created in Reached.

Songs: Brave – stephanie dosen

And I’m brave
like a feeling I had
once upon a time…

Hypnotized – Ani DiFranco (*note: only the lyrics selected below really apply, but I still wanted to include this song because it reminded me of Ky teaching Cassia to read)

I was surrounded by a language
In which i could say only hello
And thank you very much
But you spoke so i could understand
And i drew a treasure map on your hand

I really, really don’t like Christian. I don’t know why, but he just bugs the heck outta me. He’s super pushy with Clara even though he knows she’s in love with Tucker. And Tucker. I am so completely in love with that (sadly fictional) boy. He’s funny and charming and rugged. He’s a lumberjack-y bad boy, and is definitely one of my top fictional crushes. I loved Unearthly and Hallowed was almost as good (minus mildly cheesy ending), but I’m a little disappointed because right now it looks like Clara will be going for Christian. She’s always thinking about him when she’s with Tucker, and I guess it would make sense for them to be together, since Tucker is mortal and won’t live as long as Christian and Clara. But still. #teamtucker

Song: Thinking of You – Katy Perry

Cause when I’m with him
I am thinking of you
Thinking of you
What you would do if
You were the one
Who was spending the night
Oh I wish that I
Was looking into your eyes

Admittedly, I never finished the Wicked Lovely series. But, I do remember how much I liked Seth. It may have seemed like Aislinn and Keenan were fated to be together, but he was too cocky and perfect for my taste. Seth was both a good boyfriend and a good friend to Aislinn, and if the ending of Fragile Eternity was any indication, he’s willing to follow her wherever she goes to be with her, even if it’s dangerous for him.

Song: I Will Follow You Into the Dark – Death Cab for Cutie

Love of mine some day you will die
But I’ll be close behind
I’ll follow you into the dark

Mixtape Mondays: A Masquerade Ball

This week’s mixtape goes along with Bethany Griffin’s Masque of the Red Death.

1. Help I’m Alive–Metric–Araby
Help, I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer
Hard to be soft, tough to be tender

2. The Black Cat Neighborhood–Fallulah–the lower city soundtrack
The black cat neighbourhood
you know you’re not invited

3. My Medecine–The Pretty Reckless–Araby’s drugs
Somebody mixed my medicine
I don’t know what I’m on
Somebody mixed my medicine
But baby it’s all gone
Somebody mixed my medicine

4. The Good That Won’t Come Out–Rilo Kiley–Elliot & Araby
I do this thing where I think I’m real sick
but I won’t go to the doctor to find out about it
Cause they make you stay real still in a real small space
As they chart up your insides and put them on display.
They’d see all of it, all of me, all of it.

All the good that won’t come out of me
and all the stupid lies I hide behind.
It’s such a big mistake
lying here in your warm embrace.

5. Time to Dance–Panic! at the Disco–Debauchery Club playlist
Give me envy, give me malice, give me your attention
Give me envy, give me malice, baby, give me a break!

6. Call of the Wild–Florrie–Drugs & the Debauchery Club
Want you, need you
It’s the call of the wild
Something animal, more than physical
Satisfy me cos I’m falling apart
Synchronicity in our chemistry

7. Keep Me Warm–Ida Maria–Araby for Will
Oh, you, you keep me warm
You, you keep me warm
All your cigarettes and cup of coffee
It keeps me warm

8. Saviour–LIGHTS–Araby
It will never change
if you want it to stay the same
I really hate it
but I know it’s hard to choose if you’re chained
and when it’s all you control
’cause you got nothing else to hold
You’re getting tighter and tighter
It’s getting harder to let it go

9. Child’s Hands–Lucy Kaplansky–Araby for her parents
I am so cold, I want you to heat me
I am so tired, I want you to carry me
I am so torn, I want you to mend me
I am so quiet, find words for me

But I’m old enough to know
Old enough to understand
All these things I’ve carried here
Belong in a child’s hands

I am so guilty, want you to absolve me
I am so distant, build a road to me
I don’t want to know, promise you’ll lie to me
Don’t want to be alone, promise never to leave me

But I’m old enough to know
Old enough to understand
All these things I’ve carried here
Belong in a child’s hands

10. Put Your Arms Around Me–A Hawk in Paris–Elliot for the city
welcome to the fracture
here in the the land of broken things
we burned our history lessons
in the fire of childhood kings
when we run out of ammunition
when we exhaust our last defense
and we go from screams to whispers
this might all make more sense

we’ve finally disconnected
we are unemotional
and the anthems we are singing
don’t mean anything at all
we’re afraid of our conclusions
what we love will kill us first
and the way to tell the difference
from what we hate only makes things worse

11. Flawz–Caitlin Crosby–Araby for Will
All my flawz to see.
But you still love,
Love me.

For the things that she does

Stealing other people’s toys
On the playground won’t
Make you many friends
She should keep in mind
She should keep in mind
There is nothing I do better than revenge

5. Bang Bang Bang–Christina Perri–Kat & Lilia for Alex, Mary for Reeve

7. Bubblegum Bitch–Marina & the Diamonds–Kat

I’ll chew you up and I’ll spit you out
Cause that’s what young love is all about.
So pull me closer, and kiss me hard
I’m gonna pop your bubblegum heart

Hit me with your sweet love, steal me with a kiss.
I’m miss sugar pink liquor, liquor lips
I’m gonna be your bubblegum bitch
I’m gonna be your bubblegum bitch

8. Hell on Heels–Pistol Annies–Kat & Lilia

I’m hell on heels, say what you will
I’ve done made the devil a deal
He made me pretty
He made me smart
And I’m gonna break me a million hearts
I’m hell on heels baby I’m comin’ for you

9. If You Can Afford Me–Katy Perry–Lilia

If you want me, a cherry on top, the pick of the peck,
The crème de la crop.
If you want me you better do better than that tonight.
Oh, Oh.
If you want me, it takes more than a wink,
And more than a drink and more than you think.
If you want me you’re gonna have to break the bank, tonight.
Cause some don’t have the patience, some call me high-maintenance
But you pay the bill, cause, that’s the deal.

If you wanna ride, just name your price don’t play cheap, with your heart
Don’t make a bet if you can’t write the check, for me, for me.
Cause I can be bought, but you’ll pay the cost
If you can afford me

10. Everything’s Just Wonderful–Lily Allen–Lilia for Rennie

Oh yes, I’m fine,
Everything’s just wonderful,

For this week’s Mixtape Monday, I’ve put together a playlist to go along with Joanna Nadin’s Paradise

Make me dance, I want to surrender
Your familiar arms, I remember
Everybody’s talking about you
Every word’s a whisper without you

2. I Want You–Rachael Yamagata–Billie for Danny

I  want you
And no one
No one else will do
You, or no one
No one is the only one
To fill the empty space I hold for you

3. I’ll Drown–Soley–for all characters

You’ll never escape
from this sad, sad house,
I take his hand,
we sink.

4. Dead Hearts–Stars–for Het

Please, please tell me what they look like
Did they seem afraid of you?
They were kids that I once knew
They were kids that I once knew

5. My Number–Tegan & Sara–Het & Tom

It’s a silly time to learn to swim
When you start to drown
It’s a silly time to learn to swim
On the way down

6. for the Sake of Drowning–stephanie dosen–Het & Tom

When you went away, you forgot to make me
A paper-trail behind you.
I just don’t know how I can find you now.
Or if it’s even you that’s lost.
Oh, the earth has no corners,
And my map is square.
The translation is making me crazy,
No, I can’t hardly sleep,
I’ve been up all week,
And I’ll be dying to move on.

7. Wish I Could Forget–The Weepies–Billie & Danny

Standing in the sun smoking quiet cigarettes
Just before I let you down
Funny how a heart shatters all at once
Seems like it should make a sound

Monday come like Tuesday
You were something else, I will admit
I remember what you told me
Only wish I could forget
Only wish I could forget

8. When We Swam–Thao Nguyen–Billie & Danny

When we swam our love to pieces
We washed up on messy beaches
You cleaned dry, I would not drift yet
I should drink salt water to forget

9. Runs in the Family–Amanda Palmer–for Het & Billie

I can run from the law, I can run from myself
I can run from my life, I can run into debt
I can run from it all, I can run ’til I’m gone
I can run for the office and run for my cause
I can run using every last ounce of energy
I cannot, I cannot, I cannot run from my family

They’re hiding inside of me, corpses on ice
Come in if you like but just don’t tell my family
They’d never forgive me, they’d say that I’m crazy
But they would say anything if it would shut me up

10. What if No One’s Watching–Ani Difranco–Jonty, Tom, & Het

but what
what if no one’s watching
what if when we’re dead, we’re just dead
what if there’s no time to lose
what if there’s things we gotta do
things that need to be said

The Breakup Mix

This week’s Mixtape Monday features the soundtrack for Daniel Handler’s Why We Broke Up.

1. You Belong With Me–Taylor Swift
But she wears short skirts, I wear t-shirts
She’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers

2. Fire–Ingrid Michaelson
Now I’m walking in, walking in a fire
I’m walking in a fire with you
I’m walking in, walking in a fire
When I walk into you
I’m walking in, walking in a fire
I’m walking in a fire with you
I’m walking in, walking in a fire
When I walk into you
Into you, into you, into you, into you, into you

3. My Same–Adele
I thought I knew myself, somehow you know me more
I’ve never known this, never before
You’re the first to make out whenever we argue
I don’t know who I’d be if I didn’t know you
You’re so provocative, I’m so conservative
You’re so adventurous, I’m so very cautious, combining
You’d think we wouldn’t, we do, but we do, but we do, but we do

4. Forget You–Cee Lo Green
I see you driving ’round town
With the girl I love and I’m like,
Forget you!
Oo, oo, ooo
I guess the change in my pocket
Wasn’t enough I’m like,
Forget you!
And forget her too!

5. Backwards Walk–Frightened Rabbit
I’m working on erasing you
I just don’t have the proper tools
I get hammered, forget that you exist
There’s no way I’m forgetting this

6. You’re Not Sorry–Taylor Swift
Looking so innocent,
I might believe you if I didn’t know
Could’ve loved you all my life
If you hadn’t left me waiting in the cold
And you got your share of secrets
And I’m tired of being last to know
And now you’re asking me to listen
Cause it’s worked each time before

7. White Liar–Miranda Lambert
Hey white liar
The truth comes out a little at a time
And it spreads just like a fire
Slips off of your tongue like turpentine
And I don’t know why
White liar

8. Letter Read–Rachael Yamagata
But all I have is your letter read
And I cannot get it out of my head
And I’m afraid, and I can’t breathe,
And I’m in love with you
But you are not with me
