Rewind & Review: May 2013

This is a new feature I discovered on a cool blog called Bookshelvers Anonymous.

Rewind & Review is a monthly book blog hop where we review the previous month. We talk about books we bought, received for review, or were given as gifts, as well as recap our posts. Other options include recapping hot topics, highlighting great comments, or trumpeting favorite reviews.

If you would like to post your own Rewind & Review meme post, just follow the instructions:

– Create a blog post detailing your month in review. Those details can include the suggestions above or something I’ve haven’t mentioned. It’s all up to you.

– Place the meme button somewhere in your post AND give credit to Bookshelvers Anonymous. (No stealing.)

– Link to Bookshelvers Anonymous somewhere in your post.

– Consider adding the meme button somewhere on your site for others to follow. THIS IS NOT REQUIRED. However, it’d be awfully nice of you.

– Once your post has aired, add the link to your post to the link list below. When you add your link, I pinky promise to visit your post and comment, and putting the link will make it easier for others to find you as well.

Challenges

This month I read five debuts, bringing my number of books read for the Debut Author Challenge up to 21. I also challenged myself to read 20 books before BEA, but only got through eight. The books on that list are now on a “Books Before End of Summer” list.

Reviews

This month, unfortunately, the not-so-great books overshadowed the good books for me near the end of the month. I was really disappointed in The Madness Underneath, Love and Other Perishable Items, and hated Zenn Scarlett. My favorites by far were Pretty Girl-13, Dark Companion, and The Elite. However, I was also surprised by how much I enjoyed Chantress, a fantasy debut, and The Sweetest Dark.

Chantress – Amy Butler Greenfield
Sever – Lauren DeStefano
Zenn Scarlett – Christian Schoon
Riptide – Lindsey Scheibe
The Madman’s Daughter – Megan Shepherd
Dark Companion – Marta Acosta
Love and Other Perishable Items – Laura Buzo
Pretty Girl-13 – Liz Coley
The Lucy Variations – Sara Zarr
The Sweetest Dark – Shana Abe
The Madness Underneath – Maureen Johnson
The Elite – Kiera Cass

I bought The Program this month since I’ve been really wanting to read it. I also bought Let the Sky Fall on sale for $2.99 on Amazon!

For Kindle:
The Program – Suzanne Young
Let the Sky Fall – Shannon Messenger

I also went to the Strand for the first time (!) last Tuesday with a book-loving friend. He was very tolerant of my fangirling over the amount of new, inexpensive YA books ($9 for hardcover and $5 for paperback!!) At one point I actually kind of fell to the floor and made happy noises as children walked by giving me strange looks.

From the Strand:
The Language Inside – Holly Thompson
Live Through This – Mindi Scott
The Different Girl – Gordon Dahlquist (debut)
My Life After Now – Jessica Verdi (debut)

The best books I checked out from the library this month were Pretty Girl-13, which now has a spot on my favorite books list, and Dark Companion, a super quirky debut from 2012. My least favorite check out was Love & Other Perishable Items, which was not as cool as I’d hoped it would be. I ended up returning Starstruck without reading it because I wasn’t in the mood for it, and I’m not sure if I want Unspoken or Something Strange and Deadly right now since I have so many e-galleys and books from BEA.

The Lucy Variations – Sara Zarr
Starstruck – Cyn Balog
Pretty Girl-13 – Liz Coley (debut)
When We Wake – Karen Healey
Unspoken – Sarah Rees Brennan
Love & Other Perishable Items – Laura Buzo
Boundless – Cynthia Hand

I also got some exciting books from Edelweiss this month, including one of my most anticipated debuts, Corey Ann Haydu’s OCD Love Story. I also got a digital ARC of the sequel to Masque of the Red Death, Dance of the Red Death, which I am super psyched about. Thank you, Edelweiss!

From Edelweiss:
Dance of the Red Death – Bethany Griffin
OCD Love Story – Corey Ann Haydu (debut)

In addition, I got a bunch of books from Edelweiss. I’m really excited to read All Our Pretty Songs, which combines fantasy and music things, and I also got a few quirky-sounding indie books that seem interesting as well.

Tours

This month, Kellie Sheridan, author of Mortality, a March debut, wrote a guest post for my blog as part of the tour for her book. I am still so happy I got the opportunity to be a part of this tour, and really appreciate Kellie including Bibliophilia.

Reviews

I was super swamped with work this month so I didn’t get around to reading that many books, but that’ll change once the school year is over.

TOUR REVIEW: Mortality

Anthem for Jackson Dawes

I also reviewed Just One Day, although I didn’t actually end up finishing it. I think my opinion of it may have been influenced by the fact that it just wasn’t what I was in the mood for at the time, so I’ll most likely come back to it later.

Debut Author Challenge April 2013

I also wrote about my opinion on the cover and title change for Lenore Applehans’ debut, Level 2, now The Memory of After.

April 19th marked the one-year anniversary of my blog, so I wrote a post about it.

The Selection: A Rant

I got really fed up with how the general public keeps comparing The Hunger Games to The Selection, because they’re not at all alike. So I wrote a rant about it.

Challenges

I am two books closer to my goal of reading 30 2013 debuts, bringing the number up to 16.

Bought, Gifted, and Received

I got a lot of cool books this month (I seriously need to stop requesting books. I have over 50 digital ARCs I need to read). I’m most excited about Just Like Fate, because I love Cat Patrick, and I also can’t wait to read The Elite. I also bought a few books on sale on Amazon, which was great (Sweet Evil and Variant). In addition, I decided to finally get The Lux series, and I can’t wait to read Obsidian. The book trailer for The Eternity Cure convinced me I need to read The Immortal Rules, so I have that series at home. I also just won a book giveaway and now own the complete Beautiful Creatures series.

Tours

This month I was lucky enough to be a tour host for Julianna Scott’s wonderful debut, The Holders. She was really great to work with and I loved her book, so it was just a good experience all around. Besides doing a review, I also interviewed Becca, the main character of this new series.

The Holders: Review
The Holders: Character Interview

Reviews

I reviewed 8 books this month. My favorites were Level 2, Mila 2.0, Pivot Point, and Scarlet. The books I was most surprised by this month were Scarlet and Being Henry David. I didn’t really like Scarlet‘s predecessor, so I was quite shocked by how much I loved it. Being Henry David turned out much differently than I thought it would, and I am very happy I requested it on NetGalley on a whim, because it would have been a major loss to have ignored that book.

Level 2 – Lenore Applehans
What Happens Next – Colleen Clayton
The Dead and Buried – Kim Harrington
Dualed – Elsie Chapman
Mila 2.0 – Debra Driza
Pivot Point – Kasie West
Scarlet – Marissa Meyer
Being Henry David – Cal Armistead

Not reviewed: Emma – Jane Austen

Challenges

This month I read five debuts (Level 2, Dualed, Mila 2.0, Pivot Point, and Being Henry David), bringing my number of books for the Debut Author Challenge of 2013 up to 14.

Meme Posts

I had a lot of fun this month with the weekly meme posts Top Ten Tuesday and Waiting on Wednesday. I discovered a lot of interesting-sounding books, and even got around to a Mixtape Mondays post for Mila 2.0 (sometimes you read a book that just HAS to have a soundtrack). The most fun Top Ten Tuesday post for me was writing about the Top Ten Books I HAD to buy…But Are Still Sitting On My Shelf Unread. Besides the actual books, I also listed approximately how long they’ve been on my shelf, and I hope someone found that as amusing reading it as I did writing it. For my WoW posts, the book I’m most excited about is probably Trish Doller’s upcoming Where the Stars Still Shine. I was fascinated and blown away by Something Like Normal, and I’m ridiculously excited to see what she does next.

Tours!

This February I was lucky enough to participate in two tours! The first was for “The Murmurings” as part of the Debut Author Challenge ARC tours. The other tour was also part of the DACs, of Lisa Voisin’s “The Watcher.” I loved “The Murmurings,” but was really not impressed with Voisin’s debut.

Meme Posts

As always, I did my best to keep up with the Waiting on Wednesday and Top Ten Tuesday posts for this month. The book I’m most excited about is definitely Cat Clarke’s “Undone,” which I really hope I can get my hands on at some point. I think my favorite Top Ten list to make was the auto-buy author list. I continued with the In My Mailbox meme, and acquired a few great books from Edelweiss and NetGalley, and got a fantastic book haul from the local library near my college, courtesy of a much beloved friend with a library card. I also started using the TGIF meme from GReads, although it was cancelled a while ago. In addition, I made a couple new Mixtape Mondays, but didn’t manage to make them a weekly thing.
